Dwayne Macias, PT, DPT of our Bernalillo, NM, clinic recently completed his second course in the Maitland Australian Physiotherapy Seminar in Albuquerque, NM, at the Lovelace/UNM rehabilitation hospital on September 29th, 2019.

This was the second course in their curriculum, with six core courses to be completed prior to sitting for the COMT Certification Examination. The MT-2 Essential Spinal Seminar course focused on the general manual mobilization techniques for the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. A high emphasis on the assessment portion of an evaluation, which helps a therapist narrow down their possible clinical diagnosis, thus being able to treat quicker and more effectively was a focus during the course. Transition from neurodynamics and discussed how it may relate to both pathophysiological and pathomechanics disorders was also taught.

The course breaks down how to implement manual graded mobilization techniques appropriately while taking into account if the patient is pain dominate, or stiffness dominates in a presentation.

With this approach, Dwayne has helped his patients manage their pain more appropriately, which allows them to transition to more functional training sooner. The course also demonstrated different grade five mobilizations that also clear the neuromuscular junction quicker while keeping the patent safe.
